The Purpose of Education by Nicole - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

I do not believe there is one sole purpose for education. I spent seven years furthering my education in college so that I could come back to the field of education to help the students in my community as a school counselor. While I was pursuing my education and now working in education, I am continually learning, evolving, and developing skills that allow me to be successful not only with my job, but my life overall.

Education from an early age helps children develop different skills in the areas of academics, careers, as well as social skills. Throughout their elementary and secondary education, students are able to touch on several areas of academics that help identify their strengths, weaknesses, interests, etc. With this education, the hope is that the student will find an area that they would like to pursue as a career and live independently within society.

Thus, one of the main goals of education is to help prepare students for their future endeavors. Students who are able to identify their passion and interests through education are likely to pursue the necessary training or college that is needed to help them work in their preferred career field. Without that education, how would a student know what fields they are interested in? How would they understand the training and coursework needed without a solid foundation in education that is developed during their child and adolescent years? Education finesses the developmental years of a child and adolescent so that they can increase their skills and knowledge needed to be successful in their future.

The purpose of education is endless. The harder question would be, where would we be without education? Education provides so many opportunities to our students and society that without it, we, as human beings, would not be able to develop physically, mentally, or socially to the capacity that we could with education. Education is said to be the most dangerous weapon in the world, which is not only something I fully believe in., but also the reason that I chose to work in the field of education as a School Counselor.
