The Great Classroom by Nayelle - July 2020 Scholarship Essay

As a visual learner, I like to see ideas brought to life and take on different forms. Since some ideas can be very grand, I want the classroom size to represent how large those ideas can be. If I am in a calculus class, make me feel like I’m in the origin of a coordinate plane. If I am in a history class, make me feel like I’m in the center of a movement or a great war. If I am in a science class, turn my educational surrounding into the natural world or the middle of outer space. Along with the space and perspective, I also want to be given direction: pictures of dancing formulas and numbers, quotes from influential government leaders, and images of how something as small as a ladybug has a larger system than it seems from the naked eye.

With space, perspective, and direction, I can close my eyes to dream a setting and make it feel life like. “Is this real? Am I actually here?” I am very sentimental about the thoughts and out-of-body experiences I have. Those kinds of things always give me an idea I want to follow. When I’m passionate about that idea, I gain as much information as I can and share it with other people, especially my classmates. Maybe I will even teach my teacher something they did not already know.
