Leadership Skills and College by Nathelia - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

It’s not often that most people, even leaders, consider whether they need to have or improve their leadership qualities in order to be successful in their current endeavor. College students who possess great leadership skills are not necessarily more successful in their studies than those who don’t. There are many different areas of study and fields of work that don’t require individuals to be in any kind of leadership role. So, when it comes to an individual’s academic success – No, leadership skills are not necessary. However, to nourish and grow the part of us that mimics the qualities of a good leader can be an essential part of being a successful student and member of the community.

Succeeding academically is not always the definition of succeeding as a student. Students have a responsibility to become members of their community who influence the world around them in a positive way. One definition of being a successful student could be to become a leader, at least a leader of his or her own actions, thoughts, and future. Many would agree that finishing college with a degree is what makes their college experience a success, but I disagree. Learning how to help others and make a difference is a much better take away.

A person certainly doesn’t have to be a leader in order to practice the ideals that good leadership implies. These practices could include honesty, dedication, creativity and generosity. Being a good leader does not mean telling other people what to do, but supporting them while they do it. Leadership skills are not necessary to succeed in college alone, but in life as well.
