Perspective by Nathan - November 2013 Scholarship Essay

The most valuable lesson that I learned in High School was that you should always try to look at things in as many ways as possible. Keeping an open mind and thinking about something from different angles and perspectives can improve your understanding of that particular thing. This concept also helps you throughout life when you are confronted with something new or confusing.

My Sophomore History teacher stressed the value of an inquisitive and flexible mind. Regardless of what things may be seemingly natural or obvious, it is always helpful to be able to analyze and contemplate what you think you already know. Many times you will find that there are many things that you do not understand fully, or take for granted about the information that is present around you. As you begin to unravel the intricacies of your pre-existing knowledge, you will learn techniques and valuable approaches to tackling new information in the future. These practices will help keep you informed, knowledgeable and prepared for the unexpected concepts or ideas that will inevitably find their way into your life.

Finally, by looking at things from different perspectives, you will be able to determine what you believe to be the most important factors in your life. As new information or ideas are introduced, you can tackle them with the understanding that much can be learned about anything if you are willing to take the time to fully consider it. This simple approach allows you to cement certain concepts or values more fully and will help you slowly mold your understanding and views about everything around you.
