The Power to Succeed by Natasha - July 2020 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, the school system I was in was immensely underfunded as the city had a high poverty rate, and the property tax funding was not sufficient to get the resources needed to help every student thrive. I remember teachers constantly buying supplies out of pocket and having us use old papers from years before as scratch paper. The teachers in my district were (and are) the lowest paid in the county, yet I have never met people with more passion for their crafts, trying to get every student to follow their dreams whether that is getting to college or learning a trade. I can only imagine the success rate of both students and teachers in a well-funded classroom, which is what my dream looks like.
In my dream classroom there is a brand-new set of writing tools for every student. There are copies of the most recent subject textbook available to every student without any of them having to worry about paying. There are also laptops for those who may not have computers readily available to them at home. My dream classroom has every resource imaginable so that no matter what a student’s background is, they are given all the tools they need to succeed.
Personally, I went from a poorly funded school on the west coast to a very well-funded college with a library so big, if you had told me 10 years ago that it existed, I would never have believed something so grand and beautiful was real. The amount of history held in each building is both awe-inspiring and overwhelming.
I have always excelled in school, but I was merely lucky that school subjects came easy to me. At this level, my school mates and I are all being geared to be successful in our futures, but it took me 12 years to even begin to experience this type of education. If every single school in the world had my perfect classroom, all children would have the ability and opportunity to excel and become doctors, artists, pilots, or whatever their dreams may be.
