The Serendipity of Servitude by Natalie - June 2020 Scholarship Essay
Humility and leadership are two traits that are customarily contradictory. However, both are compliant companions within any benevolent captain. I hope I am able to maintain my level-headedness as I emerge into the brutal world of politics. What changes will I bring?
I am ambitious. This trait of striving for perfection, and longing for more, has served as the key propellant in my life. I have been in the Associated Student Body from elementary to high school. ASB has taught me that being in charge is exceedingly difficult, but manageable. I am also in Youth & Government offered at my YMCA. This program has allowed me to travel to Fresno and Sacramento where I spoke with students from all walks of life. There, I reaffirmed my belief in making this nation a better place for all who choose to reside here.
I am kind. My parents have raised me with the utmost care and attention. I derive my gratitude and patience from them. Every human deserves the right treatment despite their socioeconomic status. Often, those at the top forget why they chose to become leaders in the first place; they are driven by greed. It does good to remember that the actual power is with the people. The will of the masses should be the primary concern. Politicians should emulate selflessness at all times.
I am open-minded. It is essential to recognize the ideas of everyone in the room and value them equally. Different life experiences should contribute to the formulation of any policy. Harnessing input from individuals is a valuable asset in any government.
I am a Gen-Z child. Recent events have left the country reeling and overwhelmed. I have never experienced such protests first hand, and I will always remember them. My history classes explain the multiple sources of the problem. It does not take much intelligence to realize change is long overdue. Whenever most people are asked to picture a politician, a white male comes to mind. My generation’s love of diversity will help transform that image.
Political parties have allowed a de facto government to reign supreme. Being a politician means having the ability to voice the unspoken necessities of the population. Fostering unity and displaying a sign of overt cooperation are needed as well. Undeniably, honesty is a fundamental block in building trust. As the eldest sibling, I constantly find myself setting an example. I have to do well in school so my younger sister can follow. I stay away from narcotics, so she does not think it is okay. I will be the first to attend a university so she can have a future.
I will serve, not be served.
Regardless of any obstacles we may come across, I truly believe each and every one of us can be destined for greatness. I also believe we were born to revolutionize, just like the great female role models I have come to know about: Amelia Earhart, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai, and Michelle Obama. Their journeys were filled with tragedy and obstacles, yet they were able to surpass expectations and have a grand impact across the globe. Who’s to stop us from doing the same? We too can change the world. When I grow up, I want to go to my dream college, for education is the starting point of all adventures. I want to both captivate and motivate people to renew their values to respect, progression, and compassion. Together, I am confident that we will lead this beloved country into prosperity and evolve into something greater than we have ever been before. It all starts with a little hope.
