Manifesting a Better Future For Future Generations by Natalie - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

Visualize yourself as a parent of a child with special needs. Ultimately, you want to provide them with nothing but the best: the best therapies, the best education programs, things that will improve the future and wellbeing of your child. Unfortunately, the existence of an immense number of organizations and therapies available is not enough if they are unaffordable. More families would benefit from an organization that assists those with special needs at no cost that would benefit from the expensive ones that they cannot utilize.
Having grown up with parents who wanted to provide the best for my older sister with Down Syndrome, but could not do so due to a lack of money and information, I have always been motivated to provide others with access to the best possible resources. Nonprofit organizations should be driven by a mission to serve those in need rather than to make money. If I were to start a nonprofit it would be one dedicated to serving those with special needs so that their parents or guardian would be able to witness them thriving in the environment they deserve.
The mission of my organization would be dedicated to those seeking support. I would assemble individuals who believe that those with special needs are deserving of high-quality therapy and assistance. The organization would be staffed by teachers, therapists, and child-care professionals who are driven by compassion as they enable children’s minds to develop to their fullest potential. My organization will ensure that parents are empowered to focus on the mental and physical care of their children rather than worry about the cost of care.
Being a parent comes with a lot of responsibilities and, in order to fulfill them, one must be informed as to how to make one’s child’s life more fulfilling. A lot of organizations lack communication with their audience and do not always prioritize the dissemination of information. My nonprofit will ensure that parents and guardians know what resources are available to them and are able to utilize them.
I am a strong believer in the largely untapped potential of those with special needs, and I am confident that, by providing parents and guardians with the right resources and information, I can play a role in unleashing this potential for the transformation of individual lives and those of families, communities, and society as a whole.
