Unique means change by Naomi - August 2020 Scholarship Essay
When I think of something unique, I think of snowflakes. That is often what everybody goes to, but only until they realize that everything and everyone around them is unique themselves. That is until they come out with the cloning capabilities that will revolutionize the world. Who is to say that even the clone won’t be unique as it would still have its own personality and behavior manipulated by the constant changing environment. I believe college is influenced by the people and the students that go into it every single year. As that is known, I want every student in my dream college to be proud of themselves and who they are as a person, I want them to be mentally healthy and capable, and I want college to be affordable.
I myself have struggled with confidence and self love because of my appearance, weight, culture, and financial status. There are many stereotypes placed on people purely because of their race, but in the world each and everyday we work to prove those stereotypes wrong. As a white female, I am often misconceived as being born with money or having it easy in life. In fact it has been anything but easy as I have to work hard for what I believe in and work hard to achieve my dreams. It is the same way with someone of the African American race being known as poor or ghetto. These common misconceptions cause an imbalance in the world, and especially a learning environment. With a college community that will be friendly, helpful, and unjudged, it will cause the community to flourish and the learning environment to be healthy.
While racial equality and treatment isn’t the only problem in schools, it is an important one. Another great issue involves overloading students and expecting extreme amounts of cramming, effort, and work to be done causing a lack of sleep, motivation, mental health, and more. College lectures and 20 page essays are just the normal expectation, but really, everything should be understandable and flexible. This will reduce the amount of stressed, failing students and allow them to have a healthier life without all night homework sessions. Therefore, reducing the amount of not only boring, but ineffective lectures, will keep students happy, healthy, and reduce suicide rates across the world. Of course this is what a reality would be in my dream college, but every step towards making school easier on kids will help.
Last but not least, college should be way cheaper. Over the last 30 years, the price for college has raised by 213 percent. This makes higher education only available to those who are lucky enough to have that kind of money and not be living paycheck to paycheck. The options leave it either choose a career that doesn’t require a college education, or be in debt for most of your life. Sure, they set up a plan where you can pay it off 10 years after you finish college, but that is 10 years to put a hold on taking advantage of the life these students may want. As for myself, I would like to become a teacher and inspire students to work for what they believe for. Many may know teachers don’t start off with an amazing salary. They actually get paid quite little, and if there is one payment missed for student loan debt, then it goes downhill from there. Many students like me are unable to continue their education and live their dream because of finances, and this is getting ridiculous.
I say everyone should stand up for change and what they believe in. Perhaps some ways are more effective than others, but doing something is better than watching from the background and complaining. My change and my dream is that a college will have complete equality and lack of stereotypes. They will rethink how they teach the students or realize that students need a break too and cannot handle the pressure all the time. College would be affordable if possible. In order to make it cheaper now, students have to apply for grants and scholarships, but even those are given out unfairly most of the time. That is how my dream college would be unique, and I am going to try and do whatever I can to make that happen.
