Unlocking the Golden Door of Freedom by Nancy - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” George Washington Carver spoke from experience. He knew that having both intellect and life experiences leads to certain freedom. Freedom to choose one’s life occupation. Freedom to explore new fields of study. Freedom to meet life’s challenges armed with knowledge. Carver was a well-educated man who overcame racial obstacles of his time to achieve greatness in the field of science.

I am eager to start a new chapter in my life. After raising three children, and home educating them all, I am looking forward to setting new academic goals for myself. For me, the purpose of education is to become the best I can possibly be in the field of dyslexia. An estimated 20 percent of the population across the globe struggles to read, write, spell, and memorize facts because of the brain profile known as dyslexia. It does not mean these intelligent minds are broken. It means they are different. I want to teach on the college level. I want to teach future teachers what it means to educate a smart student who cannot seem to make sense of the language.

When I was a classroom teacher, unaware of why some of my students could not read, I was frustrated because I did not know how to help them. Now I know. And now I want to impart my knowledge other educators so they will know how to reach these knowledge-thirsty young minds. So, for my students, education is the key to unlock the golden door to reading. And learning to read will give them that freedom. I hope more and more students can understand Carver’s sentiment of education yielding freedom.
