Intentional actions by Nancy - December 2020 Scholarship Essay
Considering all the unprecedented events that have taken place in the least ten months, it is safe to say that our lives have drastically changed. One of the biggest challenges I have faced at school is transitioning to virtual learning. Considering that I enjoy attending in- person classes and being in a traditional classroom setting, having to use Zoom throughout the semester was physically and mentally exhausting. Like many, I found myself sitting in a chair, staring at a computing screen for two or three consecutive hours a day. Not only has this caused chronic back pain but my vision has noticeably gotten worse. Furthermore, because I did not have to attend in- person classes, I spent most of my day in my sleepwear and found little motivation to get ready for the day. This took a toll in my self- confidence, which concluded with me being unhappy and unmotivated.
Not only did virtual classes affected my physical and mental health, but it also meant that I completed my assignments at the very last minute and put in minimal effort, so long as I passed the class with good grades. However, this is something that I will change this new year and new semester. My New Year resolution concerning education for 2021 is to be more intentional and dedicated to my school. Although this past semester has been challenging in many ways, I know that my education is worthy of being invested in and giving it my all. I want to make sure that every class and every subject I am taking is given its dedicated time it deserves because I want to make sure that what I am learning, I am able to use it in my future career. I do not want to just pass a class for the sake of it showing on my transcript, but I genuinely want to enrich my life with everything I am being taught. If I am going through the motions of finishing the assignment, I should at least get something out of it, because its value will always be there, during unprecedented times or not.
