Leadership Skills Provide Success by Muhammad - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

When I was a teenager I did not have the mentality for accomplishing college. I was unable to control my self enough to sit down and do what needed to be done. I attempted attending school and I was a C grade student. Later in life I joined the Army and became a leader. Being in a leader position requires one to tell people following the leadership how to succeed. Being a leader requires a person not only to lead by words but by actions. I have learned self-control and discipline enough to say to myself, "Go to school, and achieve honorable grades". The main reason being, that now I am able to tell my Soldiers to complete school. I am able to reassure to them that I too am doing it. I feel more apt to encourage them to pursue education when I am leading by example.

Learning leadership skills helps provide success in any setting. I will not say that it is the only way to be successful but I will say it is most definitely a favorable option. A key attribute to being a leader is being able to have a maturity level higher then your peers. For people who are successful at a young age in a college setting, they are showing that they have a leadership mentality. For example, if you are a college graduate and decide to join the Army they will automatically place you in a position as a leader. Since I have yet to graduate college I have had to earn my leadership position.

As a leader in the Army, I must have public speaking skills in order to get information across to either my subordinates or my senior leadership. I must have organizational skills so my work can be understood not just by myself but others. I must be able to multitask, even under stressful situations, and complete various missions. These missions must also be done effectively and efficiently. Attention to detail at all times is essential for the completion of a task.

All of these leadership skills are transferable to college and university settings. In a university I will need these skills to be able to speak in front of a class. I will also need to multitask with different classes. I must keep my work organized in order to sustain good grades. When working on my school work or homework I must have attention to detail. In closing, It is easy for me to say that I agree that having leadership skills will help you succeed in college. The reason I am able to say this is because I am a example of this. I am succeeding in college and it is a wonderful feeling. I give credit towards my life as a leader and I love being that person that motivates others. I am the one that soldiers see and ask for guidance.
