Do you believe that attending college is important? Why or why not? by Morgan - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

It is easy to scroll through TV and pick shows that you have watched a million times or something mindless to kill the time as you rewind. But ever since I was a kid, I was drawn to the History Channel or Discovery Channel. I have always wanted to learn, I even got in trouble in first grade for 'asking too many questions'. This is maybe because from a young age all I wanted was answers to questions I did not understand. It is so easy to love learning, but the special thing about college is being in the same room with the professors and being able to build relationships with them.

I will forever credit the Political Science professor that I had in my first semester of sophomore year as to why I changed my major from Biology to Political Science. I was in awe of the knowledge that my professor had and how every time I left the class I wanted to talk to everyone I knew about everything I learned that day. I would often go to my professors office hours to discuss the class, pass around ideas I was having or even discuss interests of mine. What I learned with each professor in once class was more than I learned in watching multiple movies, reading books by myself and more. This is simply because a discussion or discussion based classes and hearing your peers leave you with new questions to ponder and self grow. My professors extensive depth of the knowledge and how much they cared about the topics they were teaching made me want to know more and engage even further.

College is one of the special places an individual can do. I have grown into a new person in my undergraduate career and in order to learn more and help more individuals in the world I strive to get my masters degree in Political Science. College is not a replicable experience from the academics, the people you meet and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity I had. Unfortunately, I lost eight weeks as COVID-19 had ended the year for all schools in the country. I am sad for times I have missed and it had made me realize how lucky I was to have an opportunity to attend school. Every individual deserves an opportunity to attend college and I strongly believe in the importance of college for learning and shaping individuals lives.
