Organization is key my friend! by Morgan - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

I took the most demanding, difficult, and heart-breaking course in my whole community college career-a world geography online course! I was able to tackle Physiological Statistics, two English classes, and back-to-back core classes including Biology and a Lab. However, this geography class was just impossible for me to grasp. The first day, the home page for the class crashed and the syllabus was extremely tedious. Every exam was asking for questions that I didn’t even remember reading. I thought that I was going to fail.

Then, it hit me that I was going to have to change the way I studied. I thought of my weekly load for Geography: map quizzes, tests, exams, PowerPoint’s, and Current Events. My biggest problem was that I was not organized. So, I looked at my syllabus and wrote down the assignments that needed to be done in my agenda and highlighted them. I then, broke up assignments into chunks, for example geography had chapters fragmented into two sections: A and B. I would calculate that if my maps needed to done on next Wednesday, and my weekly test, too. I would ready Chapter One part A for two days and Chapter One part B for two days then that would give me Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to study for my maps and review for the test on Wednesday.

Once, I started breaking up assignments, it seemed like I had enough time to study all my courses. I felt so much better. I had control over geography where I felt like a loser in the beginning.

Writing down assignments in my agenda is the best way in which I keep organized and study. I create list of things for me to do, not only in my agenda, but also on pads of paper. These pads of paper I keep in my binder pocket is for school assignments and when they are due and my study schedule, where I create tasks for myself in reviewing for a test. I make it mandatory that every Friday, I write down what I have to do over the weekend and for next week in that way, there will be no surprises.
