Leadership Qualities for College Success by Monica - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

In my opinion, leadership skills are necessary for college success. Although there are many different leadership styles, the three I feel are most significant are leaders who initiate change, have vision, and encourage the heart. Leaders who initiate change are never satisfied with the way things are currently and always look for alternate options for better results which can be beneficial towards college success because initiating new ideas and getting others involved is a great component in leadership. Excellent examples of leaders who initiated change would be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech as well as President Barack Obama.

Another type of leader is one who provides vision. Possessing vision is a necessary element for college success because it encourages others to focus on the future rather than the present. To focus on the future you must have a strategic mindset that allows one to contemplate potential obstacles and ways to overcome them. I believe in order to be successful in leadership you must have vision, be inspiring and motivational like John F. Kennedy who once dreamt of putting a man on the moon.

The final characteristic of leadership skills for college success is encouraging the heart. The way the leader communicates with others and eventually earns their trust ultimately influences them to follow his or her lead. Encouraging the heart is important because it begins with caring, and without care leadership has no value. Also, nothing great was ever achieved without heart. Caring about others builds confidence which increases performance. When the leader encourages others there is a mutual respect which is a necessity because greatness was never accomplished single handedly.
