How Education has Shaped Me by Molly - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
How Education Has Shaped Me
When I was little, all I wanted to do was go to school. My brother is two years older than me, so he was always going to school in the mornings while I had to stay home with my babysitter. How fair was that? Now when I look back, I think that only if I knew the amount of stress high school and my senior year bring, I would have savored those years. As I just got accepted into the University of Toledo and now scholarship season is coming up, I can’t help but be thankful for the education I have gotten. Not only does it help me become more apt to get some scholarships, but it also has shaped me into what I think is a smart, motivated person.
I am not smart enough to fit into the category that one would call “special” or “extraordinary.” However, I have taken honors classes and college credit classes throughout high school that I know will help me in my future. Whether I need them for my classes in college or not, I am grateful to know the things I have learned. Education has made me smart enough to know the things I need to know in life. I am able to speak proper English, and I am able to do math in my head without using a calculator. I also know facts about history that others may not know. Hopefully I can carry this knowledge with me for a long time, especially into my future career.
Aside from knowing things from the education I have been given, I also feel that education has given me motivation. I have never been one to be okay with getting bad grades. I like to push myself and take the harder classes and learn the harder things. Education has motivated me into wanting to learn more things. History has always been my favorite subject. Because of the education I have gotten, I now know that there is much more history out there to be learned. I am motivated to find it. My motivation will not only help me to learn more things, but I believe that it will help me stay motivated in my dream career of becoming a nurse. I have always liked helping people, but I am slowly realizing that I feel motivated to help people. That motivation makes me feel good about myself.
Education has shaped me into being smart and motivated. Not only that, but I also think that education has shaped me into being a better person. Education has taught me things about the world and it has helped motivate me into thinking I can help be the change. My freshmen year in high school, I had a World History class and one of the chapters we had studied over Mahatma Ghandi. He has a quote that is “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” I personally want to see the world be changed into something better. For that to happen, I believe I must be the change I wish to see. Without education, I wouldn’t be able to do that nor would I want to. I wouldn’t be the smart, motivated person I am today. Education is something I will never regret.
