Summer School by Molly - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

Have you ever been told it is the little things that mean the most? One summer I helped teach at our school’s summer school program. We started a couple weeks after school got out and went through the middle of July; it was for about four hours each morning of the week. There was six of us there helping, and quite a bit of elementary students came. Each of us helpers were assigned an age group and a room, and we began one May morning.
I taught the older group of kids. I worked with them on many different subjects and did my best to help them understand these topics better. More importantly, they had someone to spend time with. These kids were able to spend time with their friends, and we were there if they needed too. Many of the kids that were there were the ones who were not worked with at home; many of these kids were also not given enough attention at home.
When they came to school, they were able to learn and have fun; they also received the attention they needed. Just giving these kids attention when they did not receive enough on a regular basis at home, helped them more than teaching them lessons out of a book ever would. It is extremely important for a child’s development to receive attention, and programs like this can help children in a huge way.
