Leadership in Key Club by Miranda - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

A way high school seniors have always been able to prepare for college and increase their leadership skills is by becoming a club officer, which provides them with valuable skills necessary for college. As president of the Key Club chapter of my school, taking a club of 6 to a club of 136 was an incredibly satisfying and rewarding process. Community service has always been important to me and Key Club, affiliated with Kiwanis Club, had always been a way for me to help others, but not many others at my high school participated. Through clever marketing ideas brought forth by the sponsor and the rest of the officers, we were able to significantly augment the attendance of the club. With more members we have been able to do much more, including organizing the school's blood drive this spring, and help more people in our community, all while bonding as a school community.

My experience as president thus far has taught me important lessons about organization and public speaking, and more importantly, leadership. I have found that leaders do not take on absolutely everything until they cannot handle any more. Leaders choose the things important to them and delegate the rest, a skill that has always been a challenge for me as I have always been of the "if you want it done right, do it yourself" mindset. Gaining more leadership experience has been incredibly important to me as it is giving me valuable skills, applicable to my future careers, while also giving me the opportunity to learn more about my peers through Key Club. Gaining leadership skills in high school has prepared me to be a leader in college, whether in group discussions in class or serving as a club officer in the future, and the leadership skills I have learned in my adolescence will stick with me for the rest of my life.
