Dear Freshman by Miranda - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Dear Freshman, welcome to high school! Please disregard any and all rumors you might have heard about high school. Most of them aren't true. A couple things about high school that you should know before I tell you about my piece of advice. High school is the best and worst time of your life. You will gain friends, and lose them. You will have more fun than you now believe is possible, and you will be stressed like you've never been before. As a senior in high school right now, looking back, the most important thing about high school is: GET INVOLVED.

Getting involved as a freshman is important for multiple reasons. The first one is that when you are involved, you make friends. I can't tell you how many people I became friends with through band, one-act, or National Honor Society. Being involved forces you to be socially active, even when you don't want to be. Even if I'm having a horrible day, I can be having a horrible day, and go to one of my extra-curricular activities, and my day will turn around.

The next reason for being involved, it keeps you from getting bored and they're tons of fun. Last year, I had from marching band, which is August to October, then one-act November to December, then to spring play February to March, then from the end of march to the end of the year, I was bored out of my mind. I had nothing to do, or go to, or be in. I sat at home and watched Netflix.

The last reason I think you should be involved, it looks great on scholarships. When you apply for scholarships, they ask for your name, your address, and what you're involved in. The more involved you are in high school, the better it looks, and the more likely you are to get the scholarship. And trust me; you don't want to pay for college. It's expensive.

So, my dear freshman, remember my words and heed them. If you do this, your high school experience will be greatly improved. Whether it's sports, theater, band, or organizations, being involved can only ever be a good thing. Good luck in high school, and get involved!
