From Failure to Perseverance by Miranda - August 2014 Scholarship Essay

In my ninth grade year, I passed my math class by two points. I failed to try my best and persevere through challenging math lessons.
I recall not completing a lesson because it was “too hard” and I didn’t understand it. After that, I stopped doing my math lessons, and finally found that I was very behind. I had to do one month of summer school with some help from a tutor in order to catch up. Doing summer school wasn’t that bad, but I did disappoint my parents because I didn’t do my best to try and learn the lessons.

At the beginning of tenth grade, I had a conference with my homeroom teacher and we discussed my goals for the year. I found myself telling her about the past year and how I struggled to understand my math lessons. As we talked, I realized that I simply desired to become better at math. Throughout that year, the Lord helped me persevere through many challenging math lessons. I listened to my math teacher in class, and found myself enjoying my math lessons. At the end of the year, I had all A’s and one B in my classes (math was an A)!

All in all, it was my fault that I didn’t do well in math my first year of high school, but I have learned my lesson. Now God is helping me continue to become a stronger person, keep my grades up, and try my best to overcome the challenges that I face in everyday life.
