An Amazing World by Miranda - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

Books have been something I’ve loved since I first started reading. One of my favorite things about books is their ability to transport people to another place and maybe even another world. That’s one thing I would love to accomplish if I wrote a book.

J.R.R. Tolkien is a great example of an author who creates his own world just for his books. Tolkien thought out every detail of his world, from geographical locations to his own elvish language. You can get so absorbed in his world that for a few minutes you forget you’re in this one. The hobbits, elves, orcs, dwarves, and all their adventures are so well thought out that they capture you’re interest immediately and take your mind to a land you never knew could exist.

When writing my own book, I would create a new like Tolkien did. It would be a world you could get lost in, and one where every detail has been thought out. The world would be full of mountains, rivers, valleys, and oceans. Caves would hide in the mountainside concealing in them creatures you’ve never seen before. The world I create would be about werewolves and vampires, but in a way they’ve never been written before. They would live in a world with Enchanters, who control the elements, and Fey, who control just about everything else.

Enemies they didn’t know they had would make an appearance and force societies who have ignored each other for hundreds of years to open the lines of communication. It would be a story from a completely different world with people who are trying to make it better, but also with people who are trying to make an already difficult world worse. There would be fights, devastation, and losses, but there would also be wins, happiness, and most of all hope.

It would be a world that could take you out of your own and to another place. That’s why I would write a book. I would write so people can go to an amazing world they couldn’t otherwise. When you’re having a bad day, forgetting your worries and frustrations in a book can be exactly what you need, and that’s what I would want to provide with my book.
