Space Drive by Miranda - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

Books are a driving force behind dreams and aspirations. They inspire people to acquire dreams they might have never considered and definitely inspired me to pursue my degree in aerospace engineering. If I were to write a book, I would write a science fiction adventure novel set in space. I think it is important for the new generation to take interest in space travel again like the generations before us. There are still plenty of untapped resources and opportunities in space, the only prerequisite missing is the drive to acquire those resources. There are certainly not enough space themed novels out there for students to enjoy that both challenge the imagination and encourage space exploration and the pursuit of related career fields.

Works like Robert Heinlein’s novels have become hard to come by, and it’s because of society’s lost of interest in space travel. Today’s society no longer believes that space has value, either commercially or economically, and with the overwhelming cost of space exploration it’s not hard to imagine why. Slow progress has been made to further space travel, tourism to space has just reached the upper atmosphere and is still far too expensive for the average public.

These problems could be mended if people had the drive to pursue space travel and solve the problems that came with it. I gained my drive from reading space related novels and short stories, but most are outdated in terminology and don’t relate as well to the modern public. A new science fiction novel based in space would definitely boost interest in space related fields, and this is why I would write a space themed science fiction novel.
