Writing Past by Mikin - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
Writing is one of the key parts of the English language. As early as preschool, young
minds learn how to write. Like my colleagues, I write every day and about different things as the
day goes on. Writing is one of my most dreaded enemies till this day. I absolutely despise it, yet
here I am writing this essay. Even though, I despise writing very much, my prime goal is to end
my struggles with it and become the best writer I can be.
As a writer, I am strong in brainstorming and attempting to put my thoughts onto paper. I
can write complete thoughts with exceptional grammar usage. In my essays, spelling mistakes
are rarely seen because I like think of myself as a precise speller. When writer’s block hits, I am
useless to myself unless I find some sort of way to get out of it. One of my prime weaknesses is,
when I am writing I tend to go off track of the message I try to get out to the reader. This usually
happens midway through the essay. My skills in that section of writing could use much practice.
Overall, I am decent writer who has the potential to only get better at writing.
The easiest thing about writing for me is my diction and spelling accuracy. High level
vocabulary is something I’ve always tried to incorporate into my writing. I don’t particularly like
using simple, everyday words because I think they are uninteresting. I believe those kinds of
words are what “drags the reader down” when they read literary works. My writing is influenced
a whole lot because I read articles of different topics as much as I can stemming from local news to international events. Reading articles like those, helped my spelling skills to be ones of the
best. Spelling has always been one of my strongest areas in education.
The most difficult thing about writing for me is maintaining a balanced flow of evidence
and explanations. The start of each paragraph does not hook the reader like it should. Work and
practice is also needed there. My essays do not meet adequate structuring and organization
requirements for an average essay. This is one of the problems I’ve had with writing for years
that never fully got solved. I see this as an opportunity to better my writing skills and to be able
to reach new heights in literature.
When it comes to writing, I am not a procrastinator because I always turn off all my
electronics except for my computer which I utilize to type. Turning off my electronics enables
myself to focus and diligently work. I can think efficiently and be able to get my ideas out faster
without distractions. I try to avoid looking at my phone when it is turned off. Sometimes I go as
far as setting my phone down in another room which really helps me refrain from using it. I
typically read over my writing and brainstorm to pull more ideas about the next thing I am going
to say. I never stop planning my next move in writing essays even if I suffer from writer’s block.
I am a writer who has great potential to become one of the best writers in my class. I
believe with the skills I will be taught, my essays will reach new unprecedented heights. I am a
decent writer who has his good days and his bad days but also one who is able to get his message
out even with the lack of sophistication. I say so because of my writing past. In previous English
classes, I have sometimes received above average grades on my essays when my ability to think
critically hasn’t always been the sharpest. To a degree, it shows me that there is a long journey to
be one of the best writers in my class. I can only learn from those experiences and use it to my
advantage. I watch a copious amount of anime, American shows and movies over my school breaks.
I don’t do this out of pure enjoyment but also to add to my “personal” dictionary inside my head.
I feel watching shows and movies has helped my diction enormously over the past few years.
Another source of influence on my writing like I said before are, articles online about various
topics spanning from local news to international events. These two sources of influence make a
huge difference in my writing because I listen for new and high-level words that I wouldn’t use
every day.
This class is going to be my savior for future important tests that require essays such as
the SAT and personal statements for college. I know I will learn a great deal and walk out with
the tools necessary to be one of the best writers in my class. My goal is to solve all my issues
regarding essays.
