Get Involved! by Michela - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

High School is an incredible experience, if you make it good. It can be stressful and hard, but the more you do the better it will be. The more involved I was, the more fun I had. In a couple years you will regret not going to the football game, or missing your Prom. School is meant to help you learn, but it can do so much more than that if you allow it to. Have school spirit, and just enjoy yourself.

I have been in student government for my whole High School experience. I cannot even imagine if I did not have that, it taught me so much and it helped me get involved. For student government you have to attend almost everything. Sometimes it took so much time and I did not go home until eight or nine at night, but I will never regret doing it. I learned so much, I can now make fantastic posters, solve problems, plan anything, etc. When I started I thought I would just get to wear a cool sweater and make new friends, it is so much more than that. Being involved with your school is not just a suggestion, in my opinion it is necessary.
Student government is not the only way to get involved. I also did Tennis and French Club. These both really impacted my life and taught me an immense amount. There is a club or program for every person. If you do not take part in what your school has to offer, you will regret it. Clubs teach you skills that you can use for your entire life. Also, you can make so many new friendships that can last your entire life. Go to as much as you possibly can, you can never do this over so make sure you do it right.

My final advice is to be yourself. There are going to be rude teenagers, you cannot avoid it. Just do not let them get to you. This is a time for you to find yourself, do things that make you happy. Do not do something just because everyone says it is "cool". Be nice to everyone, because you never know what they have to offer, or what they are going through. Take advantage of all the opportunities that you are given while in school. Get yourself ready for college, it comes a lot faster than you think.
