I failed, but got back up by Michara - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
I consider myself to be a successful student now, but it has not always been that way. Although born in the United States, I grew up and experienced most of my childhood in Haiti. I lived a great life there, when suddenly an earthquake demolished the country. Right after this unfortunate event, my family and i moved back to the states. It was a challenge for me to adapt to an environment that was so foreign for me, there were so many barriers that blocked my path to success including the language. I dreaded going to school every day as everyone stared at me like an intruder invading their personal space. As time went by, and as I began to learn the basics of English I had to take a placement test in order to be put in the classroom that best fitted my common knowledge. I took the test with great confidence, but only to find out weeks later that I did not perform as well as I thought I did.
In my head, I portrayed myself as a failure for not being able to accomplish what now seems like a simple task. Since I did so poorly on the exam I was given a second chance to redeem myself, and this time I did not take that opportunity for granted. It is not every day that we get a second chance to fix our mistakes in life so that motivated me to work harder in order to reach the score that I wanted so desperately. After two short weeks of preparation, and practice it was time for me to retake the exam. I impatiently waited for the result, to find out that excelled in every subject. That day I learned the valuable lesson that any type of success comes with failure. Nothing in life is picture perfect, but with hard work and dedication anything is possible.
