Never Forget Service by Michaela - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

At a young age we are told that it is important to do well in school and sports. We are also taught that we must be respectful to others and help them when they need it. As we get to the high school age we are still encouraged to do well in school and participate in sports, but one thing that seems to get lost in the transition is helping others. Service should be a large part in a student's life; small everyday deeds, as well as, large service opportunities can be beneficial to a high school student.

As a freshman in high school students will have many different things to worry about. Although they will be busy with school and life in general, they must not forget to get involved with as many service opportunities that they can. They can do small school projects that are a one-time involvement. If the student is too busy with school, this is a great opportunity for them to take a break and have a good time. Service projects are even important, because this teaches students responsibility and the importance of helping others. A freshman should get into service projects because it is important for students to get involved early to teach them these lessons early. Once students learn how to serve and the different ways in which they can serve, they can become leaders in these opportunities.

Small service projects can lead to large projects. When students lead projects they feel a sense of accomplishment, as well as, playing an important role in their community. Not only does this benefit freshmen students in a way that motivates them to do well in every aspect of their life, it allows them to be eligible for different awards and scholarships. So starting service as a freshman can show that they have multiple years of experience. It is important for students to not get so involved with school that they forget to serve others.

Freshmen may be very overwhelmed with everything that they have on their plates, but no matter how full of a load they have, service is a necessity. Service teaches responsibility, self-worth, and thoughtfulness. A student must remember what they were taught at such a young age and learn to run with the idea of helping others.
