Mr. Inlfuential by Michael - June 2021 Scholarship Essay

When most people think of teachers, they think about the people that put lessons up on the board at school or walk you through solving a certain math problem. When I think of teacher, my most influential one, I think about my youth pastor at church. Yes, he still gives lessons, but lessons about life. Lesson of how to better yourself as a person.

My youth pastor has been around since I was in 6th grade. I didn't know him much at the time, but soon started to create a bond with him. As I'd grow up, he'd always be giving lessons about life and how I could handle certain situations. Instead of reacting in a negative way to things being thrown at me in life, I learned from him to control that and look from an optimistic perspective. Be slow to speak, slow to react. Because reacting in the moment or when I'm in a bad mood can make me say things I'd regret saying.

Another thing he taught me in life is to be a servant for others. Not in the way in which I never do anything for myself, but in the way where I lend a hand when someone needs it. To not be selfish for my desires. In time, my desires will come to me (if it's not worldy or bad desires). This goes along with being there for other people. Lending an ear as well. If someone around is struggling and needs to talk, I need to open up my ears and let them speak. Hear what they have to say. Then help them if they want help. Give advice that'll help them through the situation that they're going through.

In conclusion, my youth pastor has been my most influential teacher. He's been a mentor for a big part of my life. I'll always be able to look back at the things he's taught me and apply them to my life.
