Passion: Pursue It! by Michael - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

College can be a daunting task, especially for those teenagers transitioning straight out of high school. As an eighteen-year-old I could not understand just how much different college would be. For one I did not want to go to college; I wanted a career, and I wanted it then. My teenage self lacked vision to see further than the present moment. Needless to say, I flunked out of college. For the next five years I floated from job to job searching for a career. My journey ended in despair and misery, the two of which eventually found me everywhere I worked. Looking back on this journey I lacked drive. Determination. Passion.

Without a doubt, passion is the most important tool you could utilize while in college. A skill it may not be, but the most effective tool it most certainly is.

Think about it, you have a passion for something. Now think of how much more you know about your passion than other things in your life. This is the precise reason for its importance. If we took to our college degrees with a passion for what we are pursuing then we will get much more in return than any amount of money can buy. I know how hard it is to learn something you have no interest in learning. Quite frankly, it sucks. It’s miserable. It’s agonizing. It’s a pain that no one should suffer.

Our society tells us to go to college, get a four-year degree that will make you the most money, and live the good life. However, our money and luxurious lifestyles only go so far. We have missed the point if we buy into the lie that money is joy and happiness.
My past jobs have paid decent money, but I had very little interest in them. Sure, I was glad to have enough money to live, but I was not happy. Dread was my best friend. It was a job in itself to get up and go to work every day. I loathed my life. Why? No passion.

Some say that is life and we need to deal with it. But I say: Why let that be life when you have a chance to change that foul fate into desired destiny.
You have been blessed with the gift of free will. You can do what you want. DO WHAT YOU WANT! Pursue your passion in your studies. Not even the most difficult and impossible assignment or professor could douse the fire of passion. Passion is the most important tool you could utilize while in college.

It was not until I reached my lowest point that I realized no joy comes from money. At that point I realized that joy was found in the things I loved to do. I made a decision to pursue my passion for automobiles. I have enrolled full-time at Universal Technical Institute in Orlando, Florida to study these machines. I have had to give up many needs and many luxuries in my life to pursue this passion. The sacrifice is great, but the reward will be that much more.
