Homework by Micah - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

Teachers in today's time are searching for advice to help them teach and students to learn. People talk about ways to learn in all sorts of ways. They use words like: fun, engaging, productive, efficient, and effective. These words are all correct and have good meaning, but I think they leave out the most important of them all, HOMEWORK.

Homework has become a curse word in the modern day school system. Students hate doing it and teachers hate grading it. I believe homework is a thing of the past and should be done away with. This is an easy escape for teachers to use to blame students for their failure in the class.

If I could give students one piece of advice that would help me learn, it would be that homework is not the answer. Teachers in today's time think that if they drill the material through our heads by giving us mounds of homework, that we actually learn the material. On the contrary, it makes us remember it for a short period of time rather than over the course of our time in school. We end up forgetting what we learned by the next week! Instead, teachers can make a more productive and thought provoking environment by engaging in class discussions, using real life applications, and making the learning process FUN! This way teachers can allow students to enjoy learning and want more of it. It will make not only the individual a better and more intelligent person, but the people surrounding that individual as well!

To conclude, my message to teachers is simple. Make school less stressful and get more learning accomplished with less homework.
