The City of Brotherly Love by Micah - August 2020 Scholarship Essay
Recently, I applied to a few dental schools across the country. Among the programs I applied too, one of them stands among the rest, Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry.
Temple University sits in northern Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a child, I would visit the city for sporting events and mission trips with my church youth group. I grew an affinity for the city and when I began pursuing dental school, I knew the Maurice H. Kornberg School of dentistry was on the top of my list.
This school is appealing to me in more ways than one. As mentioned, I love Philadelphia and the people who live there. It would be an honor to serve these citizens in clinical as a student and even following dental school. In addition, they are well known to provide a quality clinical experience for their dental students. My dentist growing up is an alum of this school and I have always looked up to her. As a college student, I have been blessed to be able to work with her where. As a patient and co-worker, I can testify to the quality clinician and person that she is. As a prospective student, knowing that this program produces quality people like my dentist makes me want to attend this school.
One of the biggest callings for me to become a dentists is the ability to serve in the mission field. The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry offers mission trip opportunities to foreign countries who are in need of dental care. Providing this opportunity to dental students speaks highly of the program's character as a whole and it's something special that I would like to be a part of.
As I have worked my way through my undergraduate, I have gained a deeper understanding and admiration for the natural sciences. When I review the curriculum, Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry has a rigorous science-based course load. One course which they require is histology. As an undergrad student, I have both taken a histology course and am involved with research. Due to the pandemic, I have been unable to continue my histology research. Although this was upsetting, I look forward to retaking the course in graduate school. As I learned more about the topic, I began to realize the clinical applications it has. I am proud to say that Temple offers this course in their curriculum as not all dental schools do.
So, what makes this program unique? Well, they take the classroom and clinical setting very seriously. They also produce dentist who do more than root canals and filling, they produce quality people who care about others well-being. I aspire to be like my dentist who is both exceptional clinically and with treating people. I believe that the Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg of Dentistry is unique because of its location and the people it serves. The citizens of Philadelphia have always been special to me and to serve them some day would be fulfilling and quite the honor. As I enter the admission cycle, I am hopeful that I get an interview and get accepted to the greatest dental school in the country.
