Body Positivity by Micaela - July 2017 Scholarship Essay

Today many men and women experience difficulties with having confidence within themselves. If I were given the privilege to give a TED Talk, I would talk about my personal experiences of confidence with my body and how I have been able to accept myself with the help of social media and many famous figures within the community. I would like to show men and women that no matter what they look like, they need to know that they are beautiful. Confidence should radiant off of everyone, struting down the streets of the city like a model. No matter how curvy or skinny you are, you are just as good as everyone else. People should not feel like a lesser person just because they feel that they do not look like the runway models or even these big celebrities many look up to. Although many big names in Hollywood have shown support on body positivity.
Famous figures throughout the world have the power to create a movement and inspire. As a woman I have been able to connect and feel inspired by women like Ashley Graham and Iskra Lawrence. These women have given others the drive to have acceptance within themselves. Both women are plus size models and body activists, creating a movement within the fashion industry. You do not have to be a twig to walk the runway, All women should be represented and should not be hidden from the world. These beautiful women taught me that no matter what I look like I am beautiful and that there is no such thing as perfection. They are not afraid to show their curves and show people the most insecure part of themselves. We all have insecurities, we cannot get rid of them; what we can do is learn to accept ourselves for who we are. We should not be embarrassed of our insecurities, we should embrace them, because someone else is going to love that insecurity the most even if you do not.
Social media has also been a large contributor in spreading the awareness for body positivity. It gives both men and women a platform to express themselves no matter how many people seem to disagree with their views. Men and women of every size are able to embrace their body and show the world that they do not care what others think of them. Although this movement is giving people something to talk about, it is becoming more and more accepted everyday. This movement will continue to grow without hesitation. Body positivity is rising so we should all rise with it.
