Why Education? by Mia - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

For atleast thirteen years, people attend school. As they enter high school, they become more and more tired of school, and as they approach graduation, they feel the things they'd learned all throughout attending school will be useless for the rest of their lives and don't see the importance of having learned those things in the first place. These opinions are consistent as they get older, only because they never attend college and/or pursued a career. In return, most of these people either end up struggling to live on their own and be independent or they decide to work in a factory. A factory is alright; it will provide money, and everyone loves money, but what it won't do is prepare one for the rest of his or her life. Education is important and is the basis of a career. Sooner or later, people will find education to be one of the most important things in life.

One might ask his or her self what is important about Algebra. People usually think of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division when they think of math. Only those who go to college and pursue a career will understand the importance of certain topics learned in school. For example, algebra may not be as important as trigonometry, which may not be as important as calculus. Many high school students do not take calculus because it is very challenging and requires an excessive amount of logic and mathematical experience. However, registered nurses benefit greatly from calculus. Calculus helps registered nurses with diagnosing health and figuring out how much treatment to give to a patient for what problem. Registered nurses make about $28,000 to $50,000 a year. Science and math are a big part of high paying careers, like doctors and anesthesiologists, who make $250,000 and more a year.

Apart from money, education can influence morals and decisions. The more one knows, the better he or she is at making decions in his or her life. Education provides logic and opens the mind up to better reasoning skills. It is also crucial to thinking critically and for the mind to adapt in different situations. Going to school most obviously provides literacy, but it also prepares growing teenagers for citizenship and how to be productive members of society, whether they go to college or not. It is vital in the way a person lives his or her life.

Some things aren't taught in school, like values/morals and manners, but being in school around other peers and observing them and the environment as it changes can influence the way a person behaves, thinks, or what they choose to believe. In school adolescents and young adults have the opportunity to make mistakes and fix them on their own. It prepares them for the real world and improves problem-solving. It also saves one from a trouble in the real world and teaches them right from wrong. At young ages, children learn morals and manners from their parents. As they get older, it is being at school around other students and teachers that shapes their previously taught morals. As they exercise their morals, they learn new life lessons. School does not teach life lessons, but it a great start to principles of those life lessons that people never realize school influences.

Imagine someone without an education. Imagine someone who can't count money, doesn't know what bigger words mean, can't spell or read, and can't support his or herself. Imagine someone unstable, but can't find a job. Imagine what it's like to be illiterate and hardly being able to form a grammatically correct sentence. Imagine being ragged on by society for not knowing better. Who wants to be this person? Education is free and everyone as an equal opportunity to learn. Some people can't experience this great opportunity, and the ones who can and do go to school are ungrateful. "I hate school," many youth complain. People will never know how important education is until they no longer have the chance to get an education. What is the purpose of education? Education is the key to life and should be valued.
