Harvard or Community College by Mia - August 2020 Scholarship Essay
Juniors and seniors across the nation are constantly onslaught with a barrage of emails, letters, and calls concerning which college they will attend. It seems like they are all vying for the best students to attend their college and wish to grab their attention at all costs. This pressure to choose a university can be extremely taxing and stressful for students. In my mind a dream college would be able to find me in an unobtrusive form and seek students who would make the best student body. This college would match students together from different backgrounds and interests and do its best for the students it had. It would be a sort of community with small classes, involved teachers, and invested students.
College for me is not about simply getting a degree. I also look forward to the process of maturing as a person and getting involved with other students. The perfect college would allow students to do all of this in a safe environment without many of the side effects that university usually has. There would be educational programs and measures to ensure that people did not get drunk, have unplanned pregnancies, or do things they otherwise would not want to do. Having a safe environment is crucial for me because I do not want to make any life-altering decisions while I am away for four years. This is meant to be a process of growth and learning and distractions such as fraternities seem to take away from the experience. Instead, having groups centered around learning and bonding instead of status would be an improvement in my mind.
When choosing a university I don’t look at who is who in the world and all the accolades that each college has acquired. Instead I try to find one that puts the most emphasis on healthy lifestyle for its student body. Whether I get an education at Harvard or community college, I will hopefully be improving my knowledge base while still having a positive experience to remember.
