I Hate Authority... by Mercedes - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

From a young age my dad and I have always been close. He went to all my dance recitals, my parent teacher conferences and anything else where I needed parental support. By the time I got to the seventh grade, all the teachers at the school knew him. They also knew to call him . My social studies teacher, she took advantage of this. She called him for everything. She failed to mention the B-, I had in her class. My mom showed up to report card conferences. She began to yell at me and was very clear that B's are unacceptable.

The next day my Math Teacher, Ms Spears pulled me aside. She told me that no one is going to force me to get my work done and that I had to do it on my own. Every week she would check in to make sure that I was getting all my work done. At first I was taken back, but she explained to me that I had to fend for myself. No one thinks I'll make it and I had to prove them wrong. She taught me the next year and once a week we would have lunch. She told me: "I refuse to let you go to Bridgeport public school next year. Your too smart for that, and you don't realize it." She began to train me to take the entrance exam for CT private schools and taught me how to answer interview questions. Thanks to all her help, I went to St Lukes School. I stayed in contact with her. She became a second mother to me. She always made sure, I was getting work done but that I could come to her about anything. Every year since she met my mother, she has constantly stepped up and made sure that I was always set. She has been a reference on job applications, someone who I can confide in and made sure that I've stayed out of trouble. Danielle Spears was a teacher but has become a member of my family.
