More than just academics by Melissa - July 2015 Scholarship Essay

All throughout my educational path, it has been very academically focused; reading textbooks, taking tests, creating projects, doing presentations and a whole lot of memorization. It was not until my junior year of college that I realized, throughout all of these years, the heavy workload and cramming has left me little to no time to learn about one of the most important things in my life: myself.

As I was sitting in my Human Growth and Development class on the first day of class and the professor began to ask us questions about our learning styles, learning preferences, and our personalities and had us group accordingly for each question. We then moved on to find out that one of the main focuses of this class was going to be learning styles and how these develop in children as well as how to recognize different learning styles, how to work with them and how to group them for well-balanced teams in the classroom. This is when it hit me. All of my education has been so strenuous and focused, that I have never taken the time to really think about all of the questions she was asking us, and that I really did not have honest answers for them.

As I continue my journey to get my degree and become an elementary school teacher, I hope that I am really able to reflect upon myself and really learn about myself. In order to help students with their own learning styles and habits, I think that it is really important that I understand my own. After all, education is so much more than just academics.
