The Truth About High School by Melissa - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
I know right now you are either scared of the idea of being the social outcast of your high school or super excited because now you have a new school to run. Being the most popular person in school is not all it is chalked up to be.
Do you remember those super popular kids in grade school who were "the kings and queens" of the school. The ones everyone wanted to be and the ones everybody wanted to be with. These "kings and queens" of the school rule all the way until they graduate high school. This is just a simple fact of life. This constant battle for popularity is a waste of time for students and becomes a huge distraction for your real goal. Everybody in high school thinks how popular they are in high school will effect their entire futures.
Let me make this clear now.
The only thing that matters when you finish high school is your grades/ GPA. Where you ranked on the social ladder or your popularity get you absolutely nothing.
When I was in grade school we had a "queen" of the school. She was the one all the girls wanted to be, and the one all the guys wanted to be with. She used to make fun of everyone, including me. In high school she was the head cheerleader and dated one of the varsity football players. You know, your typical high school story. She had a whole group of friends she surrounded herself with that had to work daily to remain in her posse. Then you had me, my nickname was "Fish Girl" because I used to bring tropical fish I caught in the ocean on the school bus to school to put in my aquarium for my marine studies class. The "queen" would make fun of me and all my friends. She had it all, or so everyone else thought.
I saw her, the "queen" from high school, a few months ago. She had changed so much. I still recognized her and said hello. She did not remember me, of course, but I sure remembed her. I was very polite and asked her how she was doing and what she was up to. She told me she went away to college with all her want-to-be friends and ended up dropping out and returning home to the small town we all grew up in to live with her parents. She was looking for a minimum wage job with no luck. I could not believe it. I have now graduated university with a bachelors degree and will be achieving my second bachelors in 12 months from now.
It just goes to show popularity does not equal success. You don't need to fit in, be unique. A world full of all the same people would be a boring world.
