8 years, 172 credits and 2 degrees later! by Melissa - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
Is college necessary? No. Is college important? ABSOLUTELY! College is important for so many different reasons. College fills you with core curriculum knowledge from the basics of Math and English to the studies of the deepest parts of the ocean to the limitless space above. It also teaches time management, discipline, and self-motivation. For most, it also offers a level of social responsibility. Although not all social gatherings earn students a grade, these interactions are an essential part of growing up and entering the world as adults. Some socialization that does offer grades is active memberships in clubs and countless volunteer opportunities. These involvements provide a special sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Even as a graduate, an adult and parent, volunteering and being an active member in community events is truly fulfilling.
My total amount of time spent in college was approx. 8 years earning me 172 credits. No, I am not a doctor although my family often teases me I could’ve been for as long as I was in school. I don’t look at it that way though. I just considered myself a professional student! I spent all that time and managed to earn two degrees. As with the majority of students, I did some part time semesters as well as change my major. I have no regrets for doing so. With that being said, if I didn’t think it was important I wouldn’t be going back for more (and applying for this scholarship). So, if anyone could attest that college is important, I definitely can.
Thank you for your consideration and be well.
