How Education Has Shaped Who I Am by Melanie - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

Education comes in many different forms. From home, school, work, and just life in general. My 40 year career in education has been one of many hurdles, with just enough significant triumphs to persuade my continuance. Not having but a few good teachers, interesting classes, or noteworthy role models, I struggled through most of the K-12 years of my life. Of course I was able to learn the basic fundamentals to enable the pursuit of a college degree, however other factors tied into my life's education inhibited my success.

Overall, the main theme of my education has been one of conformity. At home it was to bend to the whims of my parents and their needs. At school I was really just being taught how to sit still and be quiet. When I entered the work force I had to learn that it doesn't matter what the right way to do something is, it's really the least expensive way for the employer to do things. So life in general has given me the knowledge that most people are not interested in really anything but themselves.

The best education I have received has been from reading the bible. It has taught me that these less pleasing things are really just the means to show the world the difference between what we think love is compared to the true nature of our creator. It has been my only form of education that I can really attribute anything positive to. I can continue daily life, learning from my family, co-workers, and others around me and rather than become turned-off or disgusted, I can actually enjoy life in reality. I hope to be inspiring to others if they are in strife when things seem too hard or just impossible. Going back to school at this point in my life is now exciting due to the fact that I now know I can accomplish all things through the power of Christ.
