Greatest Educational Aspect by Mekhi - November 2020 Scholarship Essay

When I was younger, my mother was my Wonder Woman. She could do anything and everything for me. One of my most memorable moments from my childhood was watching shows like Grey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor with her. She was (and still is) an RN, and I thought that was the coolest thing. It’s because of her that I discovered my love of the medical field and performing surgeries. When I became older, I learned that because she had me at a young age, she became limited in how far she could go within the medical field; but her passion never left her and it is this undeniably extreme passion for helping others has been an unquestionable motivator in my education and my career choice. As the years moved on, even through dedication and hard work, I realized that I had some educational shortcomings. Luckily, I found my way into AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, a college readiness program, and I learned three valuable lessons, time management skills, organizational skills, and how to improve my self-motivation.
Because of COVID-19, time management has become one of the most difficult things to accomplish. Being stuck inside the apartment for months while doing something completely new, such as online school, was a daunting task. It became much easier to get distracted by things like family and friends, electronic devices, and chores. But because of proper time management, I was able to dedicate a set amount of time throughout my day for any homework or activity relating to school. The skill of time management is what kept my grades afloat in the midst of a pandemic. Time management is one of the most valuable skills I’ve learned through AVID, but without proper organizational skills, I would not have remained in control of all of my daily tasks.
During unprecedented times (literally all of 2020), organization has become a skill that I am grateful for. With the world seemingly in chaos, staying organized has helped me remain in control of my school work and daily/weekly tasks. By making reminders as well as lists of tasks I need to accomplish the night before, I was able to wake up the next morning and start working on the tasks I set out for myself, whether they be school related or just everyday tasks. It is because of proper organizational skills coupled with time management that allowed me to be successful throughout quarantine and online school. However, none of it would be possible without the skill of self-motivation.
Looking over my entire school experience, I can factually say that self-motivation has been my biggest weakness. However, through AVID, I have not only been able to acknowledge my weakness, but also improved it. Through daily tasks like Tutorials and Cornell Notes, I have been able to steadily increase the amount of self-motivation it required to get asks done. Without steadily building my self-motivation over the course of the past four years I’ve been in AVID, I believe I would not be as prepared for college as I am now.
I believe AVID is the most important aspect of my educational experience. The main objective of AVID is to prepare its students for college by planting the necessary skills within its students and nurturing those skills which will help the student bloom into a successful college graduate. The many lessons and skills I’ve learn through AVID has been the most impactful aspect of my education, and will continue to shape my education well after high school. Now that I have these skills, the path to a career within the medical field has become attainable.
