Super Thoughts by Meha - June 2014 Scholarship Essay
Ever since he was young, he could hear the thoughts and voices of the other people around him. His world was always noisy, but as the years passed, he learned to fine tune those voices and hear the individual thoughts of whoever he was around. He channeled all of those voices into rock music, composing great pieces for the town he lived in. His music gave meaning to other people's lives and brought them together; he was adored by everyone.
Here is the protagonist of my book.
He found great satisfaction in inspiring others and was very content with himself. But his audience was limited. He wanted to venture out and compile the thoughts of people from different places and appeal to a bigger audience. So he did just that. His first release was met with widespread support, but also much criticism, something he had never experienced before. He had always received compliments, so his personality had become such that he always tried to please everyone and did not know how to take criticism. He became discouraged and struggled to write songs that everyone enjoyed. He began to wish he couldn't hear anyone's thoughts, thinking that it would have made his life much easier.
So he stopped writing his music, feeling that if he couldn't please everyone, he wasn't doing anything right. After over a year of struggling, he returned home and went back to school in hopes of finding something else he could do in the future to make others happy. Maybe medical school? Becoming a doctor would allow him to help others. However, all of his friends and family questioned why he had stopped writing music. He had no answer. He couldn't tell everyone that there were so many people who didn't like his music because that would lead to an explanation of what inspired his music. So, he just told them that he didn't like to write music anymore.
But that was the biggest lie he had ever told. Music was his greatest passion. And it had helped him bring joy to many people, including himself. He wanted nothing more than to share his music with everyone. Realizing that the criticism would always be there, he decided the only way he could feel content with his music was to attack each piece of criticism one at a time. Slowly, he felt, he'd be able inspire and enjoy music with more and more people.
This is simply a general summary of what my book. I would want it to carry a message of keeping one's mind open to other's ideas and thoughts and bringing them together to create something great and innovative. The protagonist was already presented with everyone's ideas and thoughts through his ability, so his mind was kept open whether he liked it or not. He was able to bring voices of different people together into music that many people enjoyed. In reality, we are not granted with the ability to freely hear everyone's thoughts without trying, so it is important that we actively keep our minds open to insight from others. In other words, I would want my book to demonstrate to readers that bringing together great ideas and always keeping an open mind can have a more extraordinary effect than we may think.
At the beginning , the protagonist's mind was not open to criticism, as it was something he had hardly experienced before. He let that criticism discourage him and it stopped him from pursuing his passion. But once he learned to take that criticism in a positive manner, and saw it as something that could possibly help him improve, he became content again and was able to write even greater pieces of music. I think this message is one that is really important to convey, especially to those who are easily discouraged and have set high standards for themselves. Criticism is something that should be taken constructively and should not be taken to heart. Even though we may not see it at first, many pieces of criticism contain valuable insight and if taken positively, it can only help us improve and grow as people.
