Do What Brings You Joy by Megan - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

I do not believe going to college is important for everyone. College is not the only path to success after high school. It all depends on what each person wants for their future. If they want to go into a career field that requires a college degree then it is important for them. But if they want to do something where a college degree is not necessary then why waste the time and money. Too many people fall into the misconception that they have to get a college degree to be successful. They then end up going to college and wasting their time and money for a degree they did not really want in the first place or end up dropping out. There are other possible career paths and I think as a society we need to become more accepting and supportive of that idea.

For some people, college just is not something that appeals to them. This is okay, college is not really for everyone. It is also not the only way to further education. Going to trade school is also an option. Trade schools allow students to get a hands on experience and earn credentials that will allow them to go straight into work. Another path is to go into the military and get an education and good career that way. The military can also help pay for college if you decide to go later on.

There are also plenty of jobs that do not require a college degree. I also know people who decided going to college just was not for them and started their own business. A degree is not required to become a successful entrepreneur. You can be successful as long as you are willing to put forth effort and do hard work. Others may rather start a family and be a stay at home parent instead of going to college and getting a degree or job. That is also perfectly okay. What also matters is that you are doing something that brings you joy.

Then, other people want to go to college and go into a field that requires higher education.
For me personally, going to college is a part of my future plans. I want to become a pharmacist. I have a desire to help people and make a positive impact on their lives. It has also always been a goal of mine to go to college and further my education that way. It all depends on what your dreams and aspirations are for the future.

So college is not important for everyone. There are other ways to succeed in your future, and you are the only person who can define what success is for you. As a society we need to be more supporting and accepting of people doing what will bring them the most joy in life. What is important is people being happy and doing what they love. If going to college is not going to bring you happiness and doing something else is going to. Then do that other thing. Being happy is what is important.
