Advice for Prosperity by Megan - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my thirteen years of education I have been given endless amounts of advice, and all of it seemed redundant … The same quotes that many students in my town have heard such as “These years are to prepare you for your future.” Yet one phrase got lodged in my mind and has helped me charge to success. “There will be so many people out there who will tell you that you can’t. What you've got to do is turn around and say… Watch me!”
It may be a simple idea, but it was hands-down the best thing I have ever heard from an educator. It opened my eyes to the fact that all the obstacles I would face I could overcome with a little faith in myself, a bit of hard work, and that sometimes we have no obstacles greater than the way we see ourselves. I now see that no matter what people will say or how I saw myself before I can always move forward and strive for success.
Believing in that quote has helped me lead my dance team to many trophies as a captain for two years, pass a number of classes that came as a challenge to me, go on to graduate, and now move towards college with my head held high. Over all I would say that it has helped me not only to crave success but to have faith in myself.
