New Year Resolutions by McCora - December 2020 Scholarship Essay
For the 2021 spring semester, my educational New Year’s resolution is to get straight A’s. After a rough emotional fall semester in 2020, I noticed how my grades affected my moods and how I felt about school in general. My boyfriend at the time who was in the marine corps took his own life, out of the blue. I never saw it coming and I started to struggle with depression and was trying to not blame myself for what he did. As this was happening my grades started to slip, and my teachers were starting to not even recognize who I was academically anymore.
Come midterms I realized I was in trouble because I might not be able to pass some of the classes required for my degree. My biology class grade was not great, so I called my best friend who is a star student she is part of the dean at her college. She told me that I needed to worry about my own future because no one else is going to live it for me. It immediately snapped me to attention to how my actions over the semester were not healthy for my education or future.
So, I buckled down for finals for the fall 2020 semester and I ended up with passing grades, I am proud of myself for that small achievement and plan on doing better in the future. I want to make sure that I never jeopardize my future again. I have wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse for too long to lose it due to a lack of motivation. I will study more, go into my professor's office hours, and go to tutor centers to do everything I can to make sure my grades are A’s. I really am excited for the year 2021 because I get a redo and I can try again in my first year of college.
