Life by Maya - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

There are many pieces of advice that teachers should give to their students, but one piece, not dealing with academics, should really be taught and stressed in the classroom. This one piece of advice would help other students and myself. In my opinion, I believe that all teachers should teach their students that school is not all there is to life.

High school is said to be the best time in one’s life. How can an adolescent enjoy life while being buried in schoolwork? Although students need to prepare for their futures, their lives should not just revolve around school. Teachers and mentors should not forget that their pupils are not yet adults. Life lessons should be taught every now and then to give teens a reality check. If this was done, I feel as though teens would have a different view on their teachers, as people, and of life.

To educate learners about life, teachers could share their own experiences. The lesson doesn’t have to be long; length doesn’t determine how the message affects someone. The shortest message could have the biggest effect in someone’s life. It may be something that changes one’s life tremendously.

Understanding that life is short and the different aspects of living is essential. Better student-teacher relationships would be created; students may not think that teachers are their enemies, but that they are supporters. During high school years, teens need extra provision. Giving this to students would make them feel good and less tense in the classroom. Life lessons would better students and prepare them for the days that are to come.

All in all, schooling is important, but so is life outside of school. Learning can be done in all different parts of life. Preparing oneself can be done by learning and hearing about life in various places.
