Don't Be a Sheep by Maureen - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
Sheep, by nature, are followers. They will follow their leader without thought. Do not be a sheep in high school. Taking the same classes as your friends can hurt you academically. Likewise, do not join clubs and teams simply to be with your best friend. Freshman year is a fantastic opportunity to try different things.
Having the same class schedule as your best friend may be fun at first, but it often turns sour. Everyone has different talents. You may find yourself struggling to pass courses or wasting your time in a classes that are too easy. Pick your classes based on your academic ability. You will be happier and less stressed by doing this.
Freshman year provides new opportunities for joining clubs and sports. Being on the same team as your friends can be fun, but it is not worth it if you are unhappy. Many people join a sports team to be with friends. Sports consume a large amount of a students' time and if you do not enjoy it, it is not worth your time. Freshman year is a great time to explore your interests. Join a new club and you may discover hidden talents.
Do not be a mindless sheep in the freshman herd. Stray away from your friends and make your decisions based on your own interests and needs. High school will be less stressful and you will be happier if you stop being a follower.
