The Purpose of Education by Matthewos - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

There is no doubt that education is a large and vital part of peoples’ personal development. From kindergarten to high school and then onto college, we spend a lot of time learning and memorizing information while developing key academic skills such as reading and writing. Despite how routine this educational process has become to us, we still often question this system and the purpose that it serves in our lives. We often wonder if the investment that both the government and the students put towards education is worth the outcome of more educated young adults. The answer to this question is a resounding yes, education is definitely worth the time and money that students put into it. This is because education serves a very important purpose in the development and success of young people. The main purpose of education is to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to not only survive but thrive in the real world as adults.

Perhaps the most obvious reason why education is important is because it will allow students to earn a successful job or career in the future. As students move through their K-12 education and especially as they move through college, they gain more insight on what they want to do for a living as well as knowledge about their field of interest. However, students have more to gain from their schooling than just information and knowledge about their fields. Students can also pick up valuable skills and habits that are promoted by our educational system. These include being respectful, hard-working, and timely. These are just some of the skills and habits that are typically learned in school that are also crucial to success working in a job or career. Overall, students can apply the knowledge and qualities that they've gained from their education to their future jobs or careers.

Education is not only needed for success in getting a good job or career but it’s also vital for everyday life as well. Although many of the things that students learn in school aren't necessarily important for the field that they want to major in, there are many skills that all students must know if they want to function properly in society. Among these skills include reading and writing. Being able to use and develop these skills is necessary for everything from filling out a job application to just having conversations with people. Developing these skills is imperative for social life as one must know how to communicate and speak properly when talking to other people. Along with reading and writing, having basic knowledge in other areas is very helpful when it comes to interacting with the world around you and coming across as intelligent when interacting with people.

In conclusion, education is important and it does serve an important purpose. While some students may question what the purpose of their years of schooling is, they must understand just how far a quality education goes in ensuring their success as adults both in work and outside of work. The various skills and knowledge that students acquire throughout their years in school are essential to success in the workplace no matter what job or career they decide to make a living in. Similarly, some of these skills and knowledge are useful in everyday life when interacting with people or just completing certain tasks. So while a quality education is crucial to students for many reasons, the simple answer to what the purpose of an education is supposed to be is that it prepares students to become smart and independent adults that can succeed in the real world.
