Friends of the Past by Matthew - November 2013 Scholarship Essay
Over the past four years of being in high school, one of the most valuable lessons I have learned is to pick the right crowd to hang around. I have had friends that loved sports, friends that loved music, friends that would be there for me when I needed to talk to someone. Over time, I learned which friends were worth keeping in my life to talk with.
As a high school freshman, I hung out with a main group of people, which slowly went away over time. People in the group I hung with eventually fought with each other, disagreed with certain opinions, and everything in the group went from happiness to drama. I've never been a fan of drama, and I knew I had to choose to either keep my friends and stick with drama, or move on with my own life, leaving the drama behind. I ended up leaving my group of friends, but I still talk with two or three of them to this day.
My life has been a lot better now that I moved on to fight my own battles and live life for myself. I still stay in contact with a few friends, but since it is my senior year in high school, I need to do the things I want in life to prepare for my future. Friends are a large part of my life, and they are meant to be a foundation for what you think and believe. Sometimes, though, it is worth it to only have a couple of friends. This way, I can keep a social life and have a life of my own to prepare myself for the future. I will always have friends throughout my life, but if you want to be happy, you must find the right friends first.
