How I Learned To Be A Better Student By Being A Volunteer by Matthew - September 2015 Scholarship Essay

Early on in my life I learned that I am a better student when I dedicate my life to the service of others. This comes from my personal life motto which is "to whom much is given, much is required." I have been blessed with parents who served this country as military veterans. I have personally witnessed their sacrifice on a daily basis. I have learned that the true blessings of learning and being a great student is realize how much others have to teach me. That is why I am so passionate about the volunteer organizations in which I spend most of my time and talent supporting.

The first organization where I have learned to be a better student is at my church where I have tutored and mentored young children at our daycare. My primary objectives was to teach them about the environment and keeping our surroundings clean and recycling projects. I also focused on fun and educational activities while teaching them about healthy choices. My passion has always been cartoons and animation and I use my talents to show the kids how art can inspire and influence them to become people who care about others and the planet.

Secondly my volunteering has expanded to an organization called Jack and Jill of America, Inc. This organization is dedicated to teaching young men and women about making a difference in the communities in which they live. Since joining I have reached out to the elderly at a local nursing home in Georgia. We started a cookie exchange, spend a day with a pet, and a holiday carol and gift party. I love the smile that I can put on the face of a senior who may not have the chance to see and interact with a young person. I love developing curriculum and learning the disciplines of time management and keeping activities lively and entertaining. They are so appreciative and I get so much out of it! I have accumulated over 300 hours of community service hours in the past three years alone. I have learned that out of the mouth of babes and seniors, there is wisdom and good judgement. These life experiences I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
