World Religions by Matthew - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

If I could add any subject to the American high school curriculum, I would have a World Religions class added. Taking World Religions teaches students about the people around the world, from the Hindu people in India and the Shinto in Japan, all the way to Christians in Europe and Muslims in the Middle East. Learning about other peoples’ ways of life would benefit students before they go into the world, and even more so if they plan to attend college. You can’t always choose who you’re stuck with in life, so being able to relate to all types of people can go a long way.

I also believe that a class such as World Religions could help some students find themselves. Learning about different religions around the world, a high school student may discover something new about a belief that interests them, and they could possibly start to follow that religion.

Understanding the way other people think is something that has helped me a lot in college. I took World Religions at the University of Central Florida this summer, and I learned a great number of things I don’t believe I would have anywhere else, and those things helped me to get to know other people on the campus that I may not have been able to relate with otherwise. If students had to take this class their junior or senior year of high school, they could be prepared extremely well for life after high school.
