Importance of Discipline, Teamwork and Overcoming Adversity by Matthew - October 2013 Scholarship Essay

There are many life lessons that can be learned outside of the classroom. Whether it is from your parents or your friends, you are always learning something. I have had a great privilege of playing sports my whole life and picking up on different life skills is a very important attribute in athletics. Discipline, teamwork, and overcoming adversity are three extremely important attributes in sports that pertain to everyday life.
One of the most important, if not the most important, life lesson I learned is discipline. Discipline is not just used in sports; you need it for school, to keep a job or just to follow directions correctly without messing them up. School work is very important to a student athlete and to have a strong discipline in the classroom means you will have a strong discipline on the court. It will be very important when getting a job and being obedient to your boss, coworkers, or clients. You will need to have discipline in order to deal with them respectfully and honestly.
Teamwork is important because you need to know how to work with other people the right way. There are different people in this world which means different personalities, and every person is different to deal with. That is the importance of teamwork, knowing how to work with people the correct and most efficient way. Without teamwork in sports there is no success on or off the court, field, etc.
Learning how to overcome different obstacles in life in a positive way and with the right attitude is adversity. This is not just used in sports, but everyday life. Life can change in a matter of seconds and knowing how to deal with your problems correctly and positively requires you to overcome adversity. It is a lot harder than it sounds but is a very important and also an overlooked lesson of life.
Sports haven’t just taught me how to play the game but have taught me several lessons that I will use the rest of my life. These lessons are very important to me and I use them every day. Without the discipline, teamwork, and adversity, that sports have taught me, I would be a completely different person than I am today.
