From Dreams of Playing Baseball to Dreams of Becoming a Politician by Matthew - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

It’s the bottom of the ninth inning. It’s game seven of the World Series and my team is down three. The bases are loaded with two outs and I have a full count. The pitcher winds up to throw and I swing with all my strength. The bat connects with the ball. The ball leaves the ballpark. It’s a homerun. I have just hit the championship-winning grand slam. As I round the bases, my teammates shower me in Gatorade to celebrate. The celebration then continues in the locker room and I have become a baseball legend.
The scenario just depicted was obviously not real; rather it was a fantasy. Sports have always been a huge passion of mine and growing up I loved to play baseball. Whether it be getting ready for games, suiting up for games, traveling to far away cities for tournaments or even just watching the game, baseball consumed me. For most of my childhood, I had aspirations to be a professional baseball player. Six year old me always had dreams of playing for the Marlins. As I have gone through life and matured, my goals have shifted.
Throughout the years, I have attended many different types of schools. I have been homeschooled, been to public school, been to private school, and I have also done virtual school. These experiences helped me to learn a lot and help shape my goals that I have today for my future. While I have always received high marks in my classes, there was no particular subject that grabbed my attention or that I liked more than the others. Typing a paper for English class or completing a worksheet for math was almost indistinguishable to me. School was just school. It was not until recently, through my budding interest in politics and high school classes on economics, that I began to have a feel for the career path that I want to take. Currently, I am studying at Florida International University for a major in economics. I feel that this path will open doors for me in the future to one day serve my country as a politician.
All in all, I can say that a plethora of things in my life changed as I have aged. My career goals and aspirations are not excluded. While I still do enjoy sports at a recreational level, I look forward to my potential career in the field of economics and politics. I would have to credit my educational experiences for largely shaping the goals I have placed for myself.
